Purposeful Placement

So, you’ve made your video. Now it’s time to think about where it’s going to be posted, right? Not so fast.

When creating a video, it’s vital to plan the purpose in advance of production, in order to create the best content possible and receive the proper return on investment. Is the video going to be on your website? Distributed in an email? Used in a PowerPoint presentation? Is it an invitation? We have received requests of all kinds, however some clients often have the placement of the video in mind first. Before that can be considered, it is most important to put a plan together. The placement of your video will become clearer once you discuss what you want the purpose to be, what you want to achieve from the video, what message you want to convey, and what action you want the viewer to take.

Videos are one of the most powerful content marketing tactics today. However, without defining the purpose, your video will not deliver its intended results and may not even reach the proper audience. You must consider what the intended outcome is in order to determine the appropriate call to action. Do you want someone to sign up for an event? Is the end goal to drive sales? Inform the consumer? Drive them to your webpage? The options may seem endless but they need to be thought out in advance of its creation to assist with script writing, casting, length and your call to action.

For example, you may have decided your training video will be used for new hires, but you need to determine the format. Will they be viewing this all at once? If so, you may want to keep it as one longer video that your new hires can all watch together. If it is an ongoing training session, you may want to use shorter videos that convey the most important components and allow the viewer to watch them at the appropriate point in the training program. Depending on these answers, you may decide to upload the video to an employee portal, send it out in an email, or upload it to YouTube.

The options to consider when embarking on a video project may be overwhelming at first, but with a proper plan in place your video will be effective and produced with the right audience in mind.
