Video as a key component of content marketing

If you are under the impression that video does not need to be a key component of your marketing strategy, take a second to look at the statistics. According to YouTube, over 4 billion hours of video are watched each month, and 72 hours of video are uploaded each minute to the site. Forbes reports that most individuals researching a company prefer video to white papers, case studies and live demonstrations. Incorporating video into your content marketing strategy is an effective way to assist with building your brand, adding value to your company and helping you reach new audiences.


Creating effective videos is not just about reaching a large audience or gaining many views - it is important that your video reaches the right audience.  You must therefore ensure that the video you are creating is appropriate for your audience and for the actual message you want to convey.


For example, if you are looking to showcase a specific product, ensure that your product’s use is easily and effectively conveyed in the video, and not just explained verbally. If you are creating an instructional video, ensure that the audio is clear and the text and visuals are displayed in a complimentary fashion.


You must also ask yourself if the content would lose its value if it were conveyed in a different content form. Sometimes the same idea for a blog post should not be put into a video, or vice versa. Content must be engaging and capture the attention of the viewer for the duration of the video to be effective in this visual format.


If your company is already posting videos on YouTube or Vimeo, it may be worth looking at the new social media video application known as Vine.  This new service, created by the makers of Twitter, allows users to create 6 second videos and share them on Facebook, Twitter and Vine’s social network. This is a great tool for company announcements, tours, as well as short previews for longer videos. Using this application positions your company as one that keeps up with trends, seeking to use video in new and creative ways. In many cases it can be a highly effective way to reach your audience.


Don’t be hesitant to promote your video on both your website and social media profiles. In fact, linking a video from YouTube to your website is an effective way to drive more traffic to your webpage, and vice versa.


The overall goal of creating a video as a part of your marketing strategy is to provide information and content to your customers. In order to do so effectively, you must hold your audience’s attention, and provide them with a call to action following the conclusion of the video to get them to act.
